Quality Rating: H Date Imported/Registered: - Original Selection from: Allegedly from Domaine Romanee-Conti, Dijon, France Comments: Also known as the gumboot clone, the cuttings were first smuggled by a traveller into New Zealand in a gumboot in the 1970’s, where it was confiscated by a customs’ officer by the name of Malcolm Abel (budding winemaker). Abel sent the cuttings through New Zealand quarantine at his own expense and planted them in his own vineyard , now Ata Rangi. The clone is high vigour and moderate-high yielding, with larger bunches. Wines are generally high in acidity, deeply coloured with good structure and complexity.

It produced the highest levels of volatile esters in the Geisenheim Riesling clone trials. [26]. The 239 set is the most widely set of clones in Germany [5].

This clone produces wine of high quality with a very fine acid structure. It expresses volatile aromas of rose and citrus and for this reason the wine itself is especially elegant and aromatic. [26]
