Anecdotal evidence would suggest that D3V14 needs to be picked comparatively riper than other clones to ensure that there is adequate seed and skin (tannin) ripe-ness, this often results in simple,sweet berry flavours. If picked unripe it can produce unattractive stalky (green) characters. Widely planted in Australia, but there are other better clones available

Late in ripening the berries tend to ‘bag-up’ and the canopy deteriorates. Yalumba has made excellent wine using this clone. Because of the virus load it can perform very poorly (extreme low vigour) at some (tough) sites and in combination with some rootstocks.

High quality wines, with inky colour and full depth of flavour (Yalumba winemaking trial, 2013). The Reynella selection can be traced back to a vineyard planted in McLaren Vale in the mid-1840s.

This commercial clone is possibly the most widely planted Chardonnay clone in Australia due to its availability in the early years, however has now gone out of favour as the Burgundian clones have gained popularity.

- 64Quality Rating: H Date Imported/Registered: - Original Selection from: Allegedly from Domaine Romanee-Conti, Dijon, France Comments: Also known as the gumboot clone, the cuttings were first smuggled by a traveller into New Zealand in a gumboot in the 1970’s, where it was confiscated by a customs’ officer by the name of Malcolm Abel (budding winemaker). Abel sent the cuttings through New Zealand quarantine at his own expense and planted them in his own vineyard , now Ata Rangi. The clone is high vigour and moderate-high yielding, with larger bunches. Wines are generally high in acidity, deeply coloured with good structure and complexity.

Lemon, lime, austere, steely [11]. This clone has very high quality potential, it is characterised by a very fine acid structure. It produced the highest levels of volatile esters in the Geisenheim Riesling clone trials. [26]. The 239 set is the most widely set of clones in Germany [5].

This clone produces wine of high quality with a very fine acid structure. It expresses volatile aromas of rose and citrus and for this reason the wine itself is especially elegant and aromatic. [26]

It is early ripening and has moderate acid levels and is therefore well suited to cool climate regions. Wines are aromatic, full-bodied and complete [12]. More capsicum and gooseberry flavours, less tropical. Pea and bean characteristics. Low yields and early ripening makes well suite to cool climate viticulture.

It has loose clustered bunches which are less susceptible to botrytis than other clones.
